How a Well Designed Deck Pool Can Do Double Duty

Many up-market homes today feature a smaller pool as part of the deck. This type of design is an excellent choice for several reasons, but mainly for its convenience to the main house. You can simply emerge onto the deck and dive into the pool on a warm morning or evening. It is often more sheltered from the wind and more private.

A pool in the deck is one of the great features Sam Sorgiovanni has used for many of the luxury superyachts such as Nirvana and others he has designed. On a yacht, there is no other place for the pool but on the deck; in a luxury home you have a choice of deck or garden and both are good, but the deck pool offers many advantages. As mentioned above, it offers a sheltered place that is also more private, but the sheer convenience of having your pool as part of the deck means it can easily be included in entertaining guests as well.

Sam Sorgiovanni designed one pool to do double duty as a helipad by having a teak floor at the base of the pool that lifts up and provides a stable landing area for the owner’s helicopter to disgorge its passengers. This can also be used as a dance floor. Saving space on a yacht is essential, but it is also often necessary to look for space saving tips when building a home, especially if the property is a small one as many city blocks are.

This is a great idea for a deck pool in a luxury home. It can convert to a dance floor or even just a deck floor so the space is not wasted during winter months when it’s too cold to swim. There would be many ways to have this designed, not necessarily with a teak floor that rises from the bottom of the pool. You could have one that slides over the water from the side to fit in with the rest of the deck floor. That would save emptying out the water and refilling the pool, which would take time to accomplish.

So you could have your full floor space when the pool was covered over, and with the flick of a button the floor could slide back into its cavity and reveal the pool, ready for guests or family to use. Or if a pool party goes on into the night hours but no one wants to swim, again, you can just press the button to have the floor slide into place and the guests can dance instead of swimming. That is major convenience and fun as well.
