Responding to an Online Dating Personals Ad - Right and Wrong

Anybody who can check the website activity log for activity on a single's dating site can tell you that there are a lot more people browsing than there are talking. And our contacts also tell us that there are those who do reply - who shouldn't of, because they did it so wrong that it was a huge turn-off. Here's a few tips for how to reply to a personal ad once you do find someone who intrigues you.

Wrong: Asking stupid questions that make it obvious you didn't read the ad.
Right: Reading the ad carefully before responding.

Illiteracy is a huge turn-off. When an ad has specified interested in meeting 'women ONLY' and a male profile comes back 'let's hook up', that just knocked online civilization back ten years. Since it's hopeless to correct this behavior with this article - the people who need to see it won't read it, of course - everybody else has our permission to ignore replies asking 'how old R U?' when it says your age right next to your picture in 24-point black letters. Besides, do you really want a relationship with somebody who's that careless?

Wrong: Pressure for sex.
Right: Complying with the ad's stated preferences.

The sites which are there just for people looking for plain, old sex make that fact very clear. If people want a one-night stand and nothing more, they'll say so. When you see an ad which makes it clear that the person is NOT looking for fast sex and reply to it as if they were, you've just become the number-one candidate for complaints and blocking.

Wrong: Trying to draw the ad's subject to another website.
Right: Working with where you are now.

The problem with responding to an ad with 'Come check out my webcam at my site' is that commercial porn sites do this, too. Also, insisting on only talking on Twitter or Yahoo personals marks you as too inflexible, and it's ridiculous anyway. You're responding here and now, so obviously you can. Others might not have accounts with the same sites or services. Having to join another site and fill out a form just to talk you makes people feel less romantic and more like they're applying for a job.

Wrong: Demanding a photo when you have supplied none.
Right: Sending a photo and offering to look at theirs.

Demanding a photo without supplying one and without even writing much else in your reply makes it obvious that you are not, in fact, looking for a date, but just collecting pictures. At least give them some reason to care enough about you to do you that favor. If they have no picture of themselves on their profile, assume that there's good reasons why they haven't uploaded a picture yet. Not everybody is good at operating a digital camera, photo-processing software, and uploading the results, for instance.

Wrong: Insults, teasing, bullying.
Right: being respectful.

Should go without saying, but how sad that it doesn't? Abuse people on the dating site, get banned from the site. It's that simple.

Wrong: Trying to circumvent the site policy.
Right: Playing nice by the rules.

Granted, this isn't a hard rule. If you're a hacker looking to impress another hacker with your 1337 sk1LLz, she'll be blown away by how you teased the server into showing her profile for free when it's only available to paid members, guessed her MySpace nick and password from context and used it to post pictures of your ape-like physique, and left a munged email address to get around the filter on the site which forbids direct email posting. We can't control how W4ReZ kids breed anyway, much as we'd like to. The rest of you will be seen as obstinate, obnoxious, and possibly a creepy stalker. And sites will usually ban you for terms of service violation anyway.
